St. Mary's Armenian Church

St. Mary's Armenian Church (Armenian Church of the Virgin Mary)

An interesting place to visit is the Armenian Church that is located in Parrys.  The church is no longer working as a church, but only as a heritage site.  It was first built in 1712 and later reconstructed in 1772.  It is one of the oldest churches here in India.

All over the church you find markings, like the one seen below, of the graves of the Armenians buried here.  There are over 300 graves.  Some are marked as stones in the floor, while others are a quite a bit fancier.

The chapel is on lovely grounds; with a courtyard, though you do have to watch out for the chickens and rooster.

What the church is best known for is it's bell tower.  There are six bells inside that the caretaker explained were all made at different times and are all different sizes.

Inside the chapel, you find everything set up as if ready for mass.

I enjoyed the excursion out to see the church.  There is no fee, which is nice, and kind of unusual.  You won't find parking anywhere near here.  Any time you go to Parrys this is the case.  So the best thing to do is take an auto or a taxi.  I wouldn't really recommend walking there.
Also, it is close to Fort St. George (just a bit to the south), and as neither place takes too long to see you could make a day of it and see both.
